We at Chico Velo think our town is pretty nice for cycling -- we think some of the best in California. So nice that even our City Council has worked to make Chico the nation's most bike-friendly town by the year 2000 (we succeeded!).
Chico Locater MapThe reasons for our town being so good for cycling are numerous. Located 90 miles due north of Sacramento, our town is nearly flat (the biggest hills are the freeway overpasses). But Chico is also nestled at the base of the foothills leading up to Mt. Lassen, so we get the best of both worlds when it comes to cycling -- flats for commuting and easy rides, and challenging mountainous rides when desired (with plenty of logging roads within a short drive for mountain bikers).
For many years, Chico Velo was a group of loose knit riders until we officially formed in 1980. Our first century ride was in 1981 and about 100 riders showed up. Today, our Wildflower Century alone attracts over 3,800 riders and is still growing. The club boasts a full-time club coordinator and events planner to oversee the many century rides we offer and to watch out for cycling interests in our urban area.
Finally, we are very proud of our efforts between the club and the city to actively working towards the realistic goal of being awarded the nation's Most Bicycle Friendly City from Bicycling magazine by the year 2000 (which we did in 1997). And which we hope to do again by 2010!
Browse our web site for information about our century rides (you can download maps, information sheets and entry forms you can print out on your printer), or information about some nice local rides should you be new to Chico or visiting, and commuting info and other cycling resources. Please drop us a line if you have any questions or comments.
